I have a story and a plan.
The story is about how a starving child from a little town in Vermont changes his circumstance.
How I made my escape from dire poverty to make a great life for myself.
After finding a morsel in a depleted garden due to hunger, with finding it was rotten I made a promise to myself and the world.
At the tender age of 9, I realized that what was going on, was wrong.
Shaking my fist at the sky as I spits it out and shouted, “I will never go hungry again!”
I began working at 9 years old to bring more food into my family. Anything I could do to get my brothers and mother fed. When there wasn’t enough, my Mother and I would reduce our share to ensure my younger siblings were fed. We both shared hunger.
Years later I was watching the movie “Gone with the Wind” on the TV. When I heard those very words spoken by Vivien Leigh as Scarlet. It shook me to my core. The name Vivien is a metaphor for my struggles. How we both overcame them.
By the age of 12 I started working full-time while finishing school. I took on the role of the family patriarch to improve the quality of life and ensure a steady stream of food for my family.
Here I am today successful and happy. My brothers and sister made it to adulthood to live on their own.
My plan continues; as I write fiction. My hope is to use any proceeds earned to get young people to the trades, to help others possibly escape their circumstances. If I succeed this will be the gift to the world making it better than how I found it.
